Using Aromatherapy to get a Better Nights Sleep with Aubrey Bay

I’m not a great sleeper, I’ve never slept well, since I was a teenager I think. I’m not a morning person. I always feel more rested when I go to bed late and wake up late. My ideal hours to keep would be bedtime at midnight and to get up at 9am. Unfortunately life doesn’t always work like that, especially when you have children and a partner who works shifts. Broken sleep is a common occurrence in our house. I need all the help I can get to help me sleep better and that’s where aromatherapy comes in.

I have been using aromatherapy with a diffuser at night, on and off for a couple of years. I usually add in combination two or three oils of lavender, rose, chamomile and peppermint. Lavender is calming and can help with anxiety, stress and insomnia. Rose helps to balance hormones and eases stress and anxiety. It helps when my mind is racing after a full-on day. Chamomile helps with pain, anxiety and insomnia. Peppermint is great for relieving headaches and this helps me because I’m not very good at switching off in the evening so even when I use my blue light blocking glasses and have drunk plenty water I sometimes still have a bit of a dull headache.

I was really enthusiastic to try the essential oil blends from Aubrey Bay. They are a new company based in the UK. I love supporting small businesses and I think it’s especially important this year. I was sent the Sleepy Head blend and the Happy blend to try. Here’s how I got on:

Aubrey Bay aromatherapy

Sleepy Head is a blend of Lavender, Chamomile and Marjoram. Marjoram is an oil that I haven’t tried before so I was intrigued to see how it would smell and how it would work blended with lavender and chamomile. Marjoram is a relaxant so helps with slowing down the mind and winding down in order to fall asleep.

Happy is a blend of Ylang Ylang, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Geranium and Orange. The mix of oils helps to balance hormones, boost the production of endorphins and relieve anxiety and low mood.

After using the Sleepy Head blend for a couple of weeks I definitely think it has helped me sleep better. I have noticed a difference in terms of helping me to stay asleep and have good blocks of sleep. I definitely think that the chamomile and marjoram help with this as I don’t usually use these two oils. I have also not had a night where I have been awake in the early hours for a long time. It is common for me (at least once a month) to be awake for a couple of hours in the night. I often fall asleep well, have a block of 4-5 hours sleep, wake up to go to the toilet and then my mind is awake and doesn’t let me go back to sleep for up to two hours. Thankfully whilst using the Sleepy Head blend I haven’t experienced this.

The Happy blend smells amazing. It’s a really uplifting smell when used on a pad for inhalation. I found it helpful when my hormones dip at that time of the month and I feel more emotional.

The other two blends available are Invigorate and Relax.

I only thing that I found to be a slight negative was that the oil blend came out really fast from the bottle so when using with the diffuser I probably decanted more that I wanted to and so finished the bottle faster than I could have. This is probably because there is a blend of oils and when using individual oils, some are a lot “thicker” and have different melting temperatures, especially rose which is very slow to drop when cold.

The Aubrey Bay oil blends are priced at £10 each which is a really reasonable price and until the end of December you can get 15% off your order using my unique discount code below.

I’ve taken to using a sleep spray- not sure if it’s the actual aroma that works or a pavlovian signal, but it does seem to work! #KCACOLS

These oils sound really lovely! We often have oils in a diffuser in our room as I think it helps to calm the mind and assist with sleep. #KCACOLS

Your ideal sleep routine is identical to mine and I too have recently discovered the powers of aromatherapy oils. I find myself using mine almost every night with great results. These oils sound fab and are at a great price point too xx #KCACOLS

I also really struggle with broken sleep and getting to bed at a reasonable time. This could be really helpful, I haven’t used aromatherapy oils for years (since the kids came along). Now they are a bit older and it would probably help my son too we should try it again. #KCACOLS

Thank you for sharing about this! We use some essential oils, and so far I the woody scents like frankinsence and vetiver have been the most succesful in helping my son relax (I could pretty much fall asleep standing up most days, but he’s got sleep issues, and his issues are my issues… Marjoram is an oil I’ve thought about trying before, and sandalwood as well. Will be looking into these x #KCACOLS
