In the press, much was made of the family’s vegan diet, but the court acknowledged that the mother’s depression had played a significant role in the poor care given to the child. The plant-based food being given to the child wasn’t a problem because it was vegan, the problem was that the food being fed to the child wasn’t providing sufficiently balanced nutrition. This could easily have happened with a meat-based diet, because one of the major issues in the case was lack of knowledge.
