An Hour at The Real Milk Company’s Open Farm

*This post was originally published on my old site on June 19th, 2017*

We’d come back from Legoland the evening before and so we were a bit tired on the Sunday but wanted to get out for a bit of fresh air and a walk and a last little bit of family time before half term was over.  The boys went to last year’s Open Farm with Daddy and some friends and so they were more than happy to go again especially with the promise of having some ice cream.

As much as I love the convenience of a supermarket and having everything together in one shop I really love supporting local businesses.  Unfortunately now the boys go to school in the opposite direction to the milk shed we don’t go as often as we used to when they were at nursery which was only a five minute drive away.

The Real Milk Company is a farm in Halam, Nottinghamshire, not far from Southwell which provides free-range fresh milk, eggs, ice cream, bread and baked goods direct to the consumer.  The milk is pasteurised but has not been processed in any other way so it has that old fashioned layer of cream on which whole milk always used to have.  The farm has also almost finished it’s organic certification.  The farm has a “milk shed” with a milk vending machine where you can serve yourself 7am-7pm, 365 days a year.

Here is a photo from the first time we visited the milk shed in February last year, way before I started my blog:

It wasn’t as sunny and warm as it had been down in Windsor but we were ok with out hoody on.  As soon as we got to the farm and entrance road where the milk shed is, we parked the car and got on a trailer and had a ride up to the main farm buildings.  The views up to there are so beautiful, green as far as the eye can see.

First stop was the barn where some of the calves were.  As you can see Oliver was quite happy to be there but he didn’t want to get too close even though they were very friendly and cute! :

The boys then had fun jumping off the hay bales:

Daddy and the boys enjoyed an ice cream while we walked round and waited for the trailer back down to the car. The boys had chocolate (as always) and Daddy had honeycomb & caramel.

Before heading home the boys had fun trying out two of the tractors, taking it in turns to pretend to drive it and pushing all the various pedals and levers:
