Pie Week at Pieminister

When you think of traditional British dishes, the pie should be high up on the list.  Originating in ancient Rome, the pie is a hearty meal when served with mashed potato or chips, vegetables and gravy.  I have to admit that it’s something I don’t make often and when I do, I stick to the same recipe using up roast chicken leftovers.  We were really excited and inquisitive at the prospect of trying some pie at Pieminister in Nottingham City Centre for British Pie Week.

As we don’t go out to eat very often, under normal circumstances we probably wouldn’t have chosen to eat there, as our first choice is always either pizza or pancakes, so it was wonderful to be invited for a meal to honour British Pie Week, a lovely mid-week family treat, to be able to spend some time together trying something new, especially for the boys that we want to be adventurous with food.

The boys weren’t sure what to go for on the menu.  They both decided to go for the “Moodog” from the main menu which is a Steak, Bacon and Ale Pie. It was quite a lot for them to eat but they managed the whole pie and nearly all the sides (fries and peas).  They loved the flavour of the pie and said they would love to eat it again. The only small criticism I would give is that there were no small versions of any of the pies on the Kid’s Menu.  The boys love meals with meat and gravy so I knew they would like the pie, just a slightly smaller portion for them would have been perfect.

I decided to try one of the Vegan options, going for the “Chooks Away!” which is a Creamy vegan “chicken” pie with celeriac, smoked garlic and sherry.  Choosing the Mother Earth option it was served with champ mash, garden peas and a parsnip and kale fritter. It tasted great and the portion was just right. Really comforting and filling, perfect for a wet and windy, winter evening.

Matteo went for the “Moo” – British Beef Steak and Craft Ale with fries and onion rings and he really enjoyed it.

As you can see below, my pie went down well!

We had a little room left for pudding and all went for the ice cream. I tried the vegan ice cream with shortbread biscuit.

Ethan went for chocolate orange and Oliver for mint chocolate.

The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, really friendly and helpful staff and is in a great position really close to the Old Market Square.  We would definitely recommend a visit and will hopefully be going back ourselves some time soon.

  1. Looks like fun! The make a deal about Pi day at school for the kids. Oh, to top it with an ice cream pie! That I could do! Next year, planned! #kcacols xoxo

  2. OMG this place looks immense! My husband is off work next week and I’m going to suggest we drive to Nottingham (From Sheffield) to try these! I’m vegetarian so it’s great to know I would be catered for as well. My husband would freak for the steak, bacon and ale pie! Thanks so much for sharing, I’ll let you know how it goes! #KCACOLS

    1. I’ve just checked the website and there’s a branch in Sheffield so you don’t have to go too far x

  3. Oh yummy – I love a good pie. Chicken and mushroom is my favourite, followed by Shepherd’s Pie x #KCACOLS
